These historic images are from the Del Monte Fruit Company were sourced from History San Jose in 2013 for a commissioned artwork created for the San Jose Museums of Art about “fruit cocktail.” Fruit cocktail as an American created desert comes from the canning industry established in San Jose by the descendants of Italian immigrants in the late 1800’s. The women photographed were part of a public service campaign during WWII when women took over factory jobs to keep the canned goods in circulation to American consumers in the 1940’s.
